Where should you take engagement photos in Austin?

The best engagement photo locations in Austin are the quiet stretches of the Colorado River at dusk, the Lady Bird Lake trail, Mount Bonnell, the streets and bars of downtown, and the Hill Country west of the city. From late March to mid April, bluebonnets bloom within 30 minutes of town.

Jasmin and Grant's session above is the river at last light, ten minutes from downtown. Molly and Shane's is a booth, a pizza, and a round of drinks at a bar they actually go to. Both approaches work. The location matters less than whether you would spend that evening there anyway.

We keep a running list of spots and the light at each one in the 15 best engagement photo locations in Austin. For spring sessions, see our bluebonnet spots near Austin.

How much does an engagement session cost?

An engagement session with us begins at $2,500. Most of our engagement clients are couples we also photograph through the wedding itself. Wedding collections begin at $8,000, and most couples invest between $9,000 and $14,000. Sessions run about two hours, usually in the last light of the day.

Every session includes location planning with us beforehand and a finished, edited gallery. Full collection details are on the investment page, and our wedding work is at Austin wedding photography.

Do you need an engagement session before your wedding?

No rule requires one, but most couples who book Friesen Co for a wedding add an engagement session first. It buys an unhurried evening in front of the same two photographers before the wedding day, so the portraits move faster once the day arrives. Sessions begin at $2,500.

When should you schedule your engagement session?

Schedule your engagement session six to nine months before the wedding, before your save the dates mail. In Austin, the best months are October through May. We shoot in the last 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. For bluebonnets, book late March through mid April.

August in Austin regularly passes 100 degrees, so summer sessions start late and stay near water or shade. Fall and spring give you soft light and comfortable temperatures. If you want the photos for save the dates or a wedding website, work backward from your mailing date and leave four weeks for editing.

Do you travel for engagement sessions?

Yes. We photograph engagement sessions anywhere. Recent sessions include the headlands above the Golden Gate in San Francisco and the limestone architecture of downtown Fort Worth. Travel outside Texas is quoted with the session, and sessions attached to a destination wedding usually fold into the trip we are already making.

Karthik and Tira wanted the fog, so we shot in it. If your wedding is away from Texas, read about how we work destination weddings. If the proposal has not happened yet, that is its own craft: proposal photography in Austin.
