Jake had photographed well before this day. We knew that because we had already shot a couples session with him and Riley in Mueller and North Loop a few months earlier. What Riley did not know was why Jake wanted another one.

He picked a walkway above the water in downtown Austin, late in the day when the light goes gold and everybody on the trail looks better than they do at noon. A small sign and a candle waited by the railing. So did Jake, checking his phone like a man who is definitely not about to change his life. Then Riley arrived, the phone went away, and he went to one knee.
