Some couples dress to blend into a city. Mathias and Doralicia dressed to outnumber it: a cream blazer, a yellow polka-dot dress, and later a rainbow-striped top that turned a glass office tower into a backdrop instead of a subject.

We moved through downtown Austin the way you would on a good afternoon off. Inside first, a loft lounge with industrial windows and a teal velvet sofa, the two of them holding hands like they were waiting on cocktails. Then out between the high-rises, walking arm in arm, and finally to a plaza where we backed way up and let a limestone facade fill the frame, the two of them a small bright detail at its base.

Scale is the trick of downtown sessions. Get close for the laugh, then walk half a block away and photograph the two of you as a fact of the city.
